FAQs On Our Music Licence

What is SOCAN and SOCAN Licence?

SOCAN represents the performing rights of millions of Canadian and international music creators and publishers. Through licences, SOCAN gives businesses the permission to use music legally and ethically. Through reciprocal agreements with affiliated performing rights organizations around the world, SOCAN receives/distributes royalties on behalf of rights owners in other countries.

Since SOCAN is Canadian does it mean my radio will be Canadian too?

Yes! Your station becomes Canadian, Our license covers your Canadian audience. Streams are "owned" by Streemlion which is also Canadian. We act on your behalf- file and pay for your royalties which ensures that music creators and publishers are properly and fairly compensated. While listing on directories do endeavor to declare your station as Canadian, as well as on your website.  Please, follow these instructions

You offer licensed streams, are we mandated to use Pop-up Players?

YES! Our SOCAN license mandates you to use our Popup Player as root url for your Tune-in link. So send us a ticket requesting your pop up embed codes with your station details and logo url. The Popup player url has provision for your station name. Ensure what you send matches the station name on your dashboard. Also let us know the 2 dominant colors of your station. You can send us in color code numbers (#0000).

Do you have materials to identify my station as SOCAN-covered?

Yes! We have a "SOCAN Licensed to Play" web banner. We equally have a radio drop for scheduling into your playlist. Download them HERE. Your're advised to use the banner and regularly broadcast the drop on your Streemlion-powered radio to properly identify your station as legit.

Does my SOCAN licence impose any restrictions?

Yes! No absolute rights anywhere.

1. Our licence does not cover you putting paid ads/commercials on your streams if you're on any package ranging from LionCob Plan to Mufasa Plan. ONLY our GrandLion (Business) Plan allows in-stream commercials.

2. Our licence only covers the music broadcast directly off our platform.

3. You can not relay 3rd-party streams onto our system. The external relay stream is not covered, which also invalidates your station's license coverage.

4. Our SOCAN licence does not cover or empower you to engage in illegal music sharing or on-demand music activities.

What about Music Use?

The reciprocal agreements SOCAN has in place with foreign societies like BMI, SESAC, SoundExchange,  ASCAP among others absolutely benefits Licence holders, as it allows you to publicly play almost the world’s repertoire of music under copyright rather than limit you to only SOCAN's artists/authors/composers/publishers. Feel free to play music legally acquired by you or legally given to you by their right owners. However, don't misinterpret this to mean we're covered by licenses from these CMOs. As a Canadian stream host, we only have access to their music repertoires owing to SOCAN's reciprocal affiliations with them as overseas partners collecting royalties on their behalf. ____ See links here of USA PROs announcing SOCAN as their reciprocal partner:  SESAC   ASCAP    BMI
